Shipwreck Wednesday brings you a special edition this week and next in connection with Nicolle's North Carolina Wreck Dive presentation she'll be giving at the Oregon Scuba Club next Thursday, August 2nd at 7pm at Max’s Fanno Creek Brew Pub... in Tigard.

Today's featured wreck is the U-701, a german U-Boat sunk on July 7, 1942 and one of only 3 U-Boats located off the coast of North Carolina. More interesting then her service record and sinking is her discovery in 1989 whcih was kept secret for over 15 years. It is also reported the U-701 is much more exposed as of this diving season than at anytime since the late 1980's. Click here to read more!

CALIFORNIA COAST

Shipwreck Wednesday brings us the wreck of the MOODY! Who knew California ships could also be movie stars? After her active military service neded she was purchased by MGM for a mere $35k and altered to represent a German destroyer. She w...as rigged with explosives and her sinking was filmed as the destruction caused by torpedoes from the fictional American submarine AL-14 (played by USS S-31 (SS-136)) in the 1933 submarine movie Hell Below starring Jimmy Durante and Robert Montgomery in 1933. She was rediscovered by wreck divers in 1973 in about 135-150 fsw in San Pedro Bay.
